City staff recommended some funding for the proposed Tide to Town trail network that I discussed in a recent column. DeLoach wants $6.7 million be earmarked for specific phases of the project. Mayor Eddie DeLoach compared Tide to Town to the Atlanta Beltline, but the nonprofit’s website notes some other trail networks that might be more appropriate comparisons, including those in Augusta, Carrollton, Columbus and Athens-Clarke County. Since Atlanta was founded as a railroad town, it made sense to repurpose abandoned rail lines that encircled the city’s core to create a trail network. Those working on Savannah’s version of the BeltLine, the Tide to Town urban trail system, would seem to be on the right track by using canal banks for portions of the proposed route..
